Specific (구체적인) - 명확하고 구체적인 목표는 막연한 목표보다 실현될 가능성이 훨씬 커집니다. 구체적인 목표를 설정하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 6가지의 W에 대한 답을 할 수 있어야 합니다.
*Who: 누구의 목표 이며, 누가 하는 것인가?
*What: 무엇을 달성하고 싶은 것인가?
*Where: 어디서 달성하려는 것인가?
*When: 목표달성에 필요한 시간은?
*Which: 목표달성에 필요한 조건이나 제약은?
*Why: 목표 달성의 이유와 목적 나에게 주어진 보상은?예: 막연한 목표, "멋진 몸매를 만들어야지!!!" 이러면 곤란하조. 그렇다면 구체적인 목표는, "헬스클럽에 회원등록을 하고 반드시 1주일에 3번은 가야함"
Measurable (측정가능 하도록) - 목표 달성에 대한 진척도를 판단하기 위해서는 숫자로 구체적인 판단기준들을 정해서 측정할 수 있도록 해야 합니다. 목표에 대한 진척도를 측정함으로서 계획에서 벗어나지 않게 하고, 목표한 일정을 맞출 수 있게 되어 결론적으로는 목표 달성의 기쁨을 느끼면서 그것으로 인해 스스로를 격려하게 되고 목표로 도달하는데 필요한 지속적인 노력의 동기가 될수 있습니다.

Attainable (달성할 수 있는) - 스스로에게 있어서 가장 중요한 목표를 설정했다면, 그것을 실현시킬 수 있는 방법을 생각해 내야 합니다. 목표를 달성하기 위해서 필요한 자세,능력,기술 그리고 금전적인 부분까지도 함께 노력해야 합니다.이러한 것들을 생각함으로서 이제까지 놓치고 있었던 목표에 다가갈 수 있게 하는 기회들을 발견할 수 있게 됩니다.
목표 달성의 단계들 현명하게 계획해서 각 단계별로 기간을 둔다면 어떠한 목표라도 대부분 목표를 달성할 수 있습니다.처음에는 도저희 달성하기 어렵다고 생각되었던 목표들도 결국에는 달성이 가능하게 될것입니다. 그것은 목표를 낮춤으로서 달성된 것이 아니라 스스로가 과정들을 충실히 진행함으로서 스스로 발전하여 목표에 맞는 존재가 된것입니다.달성하고자하는 목표들을 정리하다보면 스스로에게 이미지화 됩니다. 이러한 과정을 통해 본인 스스로 목표에 대한 가치를 확인하게 되고 또 수행하는 과정에서 필요한 인격이나 개성을 발전시키게 됩니다.
Realistic (현실적인) - 현실적이라는 것은 목표를 수행하려는 의지와 노력이 있다는 것입니다. 목표는 높이 세우고 게다가 현실적인 목표를 세운다는 것은 오로지 본인만이 결정할 수 있는 사항입니다.그러나 확실한것은 모든 목표는 구체적인 과정을 포함하고 있다는 것입니다. 높은 목표를 세우는 것이 오히려 낮은 목표보다 실현될 가능성이 높은 것은 낮은 목표는 낮은 동기일 수 밖에 없기 때문입니다. 지금까지 수행하기 어려운 많은 일들을 완수하면서 생각할때 크게 어렵지 않다고 느끼는 것은 아마도 노력하는 것을 즐겼기 때문일 것 입니다.
스스로 목표를 달성할 수 있다는 믿음있다면 그것은 현실적인 목표라고 할 수 있습니다. 또한 비슷한 목표나 비슷한 상황에서 목표를 달성한 경험이 있었는가를 생각해 보는 것도 목표가 현실적인가를 판단할 수 있는 근거가 될 수 있습니다.
Timely (기간)- 목표는 반드시 기간을 정해야 합니다. 기간이 정해져 있지 않는 목표는 아무런 의미가 없습니다.
